WICHITA -- The Arkansas City High School football team played about as stellar a game as possible on defense Friday night at Wichita South. However, the host Titans capitalized on a turnover and held on for a 6-0 nonleague victory against the Bulldogs (0-3).
Three times the Titans (3-0) were deep in their own territory when the Ark City defense held on fourth down. The Bulldogs also blocked a 39-yard field-goal try and forced two turnovers.
Freshman Gabe Welch made his first high school start at quarterback in place of injured Haden O'Toole. Welch had a shaky start, throwing two intercetpions, but settled down and moved the Bulldogs down the field.
Ark City threatened with less than three minutes remaining in the game, but faced fourth-and-6 at the South 39-yard line. Welch's pass to 6-foot-5 senior tight end Andrew Schnackenberg was tipped into the air and fell incomplete in the end zone.
South scored the only points of the game on an interception at the Ark City 18. Deshawn Grant ran a pair of quarterback keepers, the second one for a 7-yard touchdown early in the first quarter.
