SALINA — It seemed the Arkansas City High School football team was playing catch-up all night Friday at Salina Central.
The Bulldogs never caught them.
Ark City committed three turnovers in a 33-27 loss in AV-CTL D-II action at Salina Stadium.
The run game, once again, was nearly nonexistent for the Bulldogs (1-4, 0-3 AV-CTL D-II), who finished with a paltry 19 yards on 16 carries. Much of that was because of playing catch-up, Ark City was forced to throw the ball. Quarterback Gabe Welch finished 22-of-32 passing for 295 yards, with one interception.
Junior Jonas Stoy returned an interception 10 yards to the end zone two minutes into the second quarter to knot the score 7-7.
Jameer Moore, however, scored his second touchdown of the game and Kenyon McMillan added a 23-yard TD run to put the Mustangs (1-4, 1-3) ahead 21-7 at halftime.
Sophomore tailback Wyatt Bahm scored the first of his two touchdowns less than three minutes into the second half, but Central answered on a 9-yard TD pass from quarterback Parker Kavanaugh to Ezavyar Jackson.
Every time the Bulldogs closed the gap, Salina Central found the end zone again.
Cadon Clark caught six passes for 106 yards for Ark City.
The Bulldogs gave up 328 rushing yards, with Moore and Kenyon McMillan gaining 130 yards apiece.
