A chance to hear from primary election candidates is coming up at scheduled political forums in Winfield and Burden.
Two forums, both in person, will be held in July, but they will also be livestreamed on the internet, according to a press release. The Cowley County Legislative Committee is hosting the forums.
The first is at 6 p.m. July 9 at Baden Square in Winfield, according to a press release. It features candidates for the Democratic nomination in Kansas House District 79, which includes Winfield, Oxford, Belle Plaine and part of Mulvane.
Ken White, of Belle Plaine, and Richard Kautz, of Mulvane, are competing to face Republican incumbent Cheryl Helmer, of Mulvane, in the Nov. 3 general election. The primary is Aug. 4.
Following that event, candidates for Cowley County Commission District 3 will appear at 7 p.m., also in Baden Square.
Incumbent Alan Groom, of rural Winfield, faces challenger Jim Sybrant, of Arkansas City, in the Republican primary. No democrats are running, so whoever wins the primary earns the seat.
Plans also are in the works for a forum between incumbent Bob Voegele and challenger Gary Wilson for Cowley County Commission District 2. Both are Republicans.
A separate forum is at 6 p.m. July 22 at the Burden Community Building. It will feature Republican candidates for Kansas Senate District 14, which includes most of rural Cowley County and all of Chautauqua County.
Incumbent Bruce Givens faces challenger Michael Fagg, both of El Dorado, in that primary. No Democrats are in the race.
Both events will be livestreamed on the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page for those who don’t attend, according to the release. Social distancing and face masks are encouraged.
A fall candidate forum for the House District 79 general election is Sept. 29, the release states.
