The Arkansas City Police Department is warning citizens about dangers of leaving valuables in their vehicles after a recent rash of burglaries to vehicles in town.

Recently, citizens have reported several such “smash and grabs.” Police currently are investigating five different cases that they suspect are related.

“They are happening all across town and there is not a specific area being hit,” said Police Chief Dan Ward.

Several vehicles have had windows broken out and valuables inside the vehicle have been removed. The most common items being stolen are women’s purses.

In some of the cases, credit and debit cards have been compromised shortly after the burglary has occurred. Many of these thefts have occurred during the daylight hours.

Other jurisdictions in the area also have received similar reports, leading law enforcement to conclude that the same suspect or suspects are affecting several communities.

Investigators currently are working these cases in an attempt to identify possible suspects.

Citizens are urged to call 911 or contact the ACPD at (620) 441-4444 if they see anyone acting suspiciously or looking into parked vehicles.
