Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti confirmed Tuesday night of one fatality after the driver and passenger of a motorcycle were transported to the hospital.
Initially two people were transported to the hospital around 5:10 p.m., one in critical condition, after a northbound motorcycle wrecked on U.S. 77 Highway, about a 1/4 mile south of Cowley Cinema 8.
One person was reported near cardiac arrest when being transported to South Central Kansas Medical Center, the other not sustaining life-threatening injuries, according to scanner communications.
Authorities on scene said the front tire of a motorcycle blew out and the driver lost control going about 70 miles per hour, the road’s posted legal speed limit.
Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane as emergency officials responded to the wreck.
The motorcyclist driving in front of the accident victims told law enforcement that he saw the motorcycle out of control in his rearview mirror and immediately put on the brakes to help after the incident.
Additional information will be released when the full report is released.
