U.S. 160 accident deemed fatal

The Friday-night accident east of Oxford was confirmed fatal, according to a Sumner County Sheriff’s report.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol, investigated a fatality traffic accident at 8:58 p.m. Friday in the 1800 block of East U.S. 160 Highway.

The investigation revealed a 2007 Nissan Murano was traveling eastbound at the curves east of the Arkansas River bridge, just outside Oxford. As the vehicle drove out of the curve, it crossed the center-line and collided with a 2018 Volvo semi-tractor trailer traveling westbound.

An EagleMed helicopter was called to the scene, but did not transport the victim due to the driver being in full arrest when he was freed from the vehicle, according to the Winfield Fire Department (WFD). Winfield EMS transported him in full arrest to William Newton Hospital.

The male driver was later pronounced deceased by medical personnel. The driver of the semi was treated for minor injuries. The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) has not released the names of those involved or whether the driver of the SUV was impaired, as of Monday afternoon. The investigation is still ongoing.

Cowley County deputies assisted with traffic control and the report.
