Three more Cowley County residents have died of COVID-19, county health officer Tom Langer said Friday, bringing the total number of deaths in the county to eight.

The deceased individuals are a woman in her 80s and a woman in her 50s, both from Winfield, and a man in his 50s from Arkansas City. Langer said. All three of the deceased tested positive and were hospitalized in August. Langer said he did not have any further information on the three people.

Of the eight deaths, five have occurred in the past week, including the three announced Friday, Langer said.

“This is heartbreaking. This is the reality,” said Langer of the deaths. “Up to eight families in the county have had to deal with this.”

As of Friday afternoon, 5,194 tests have been performed. There have been 367 positive results, with 36 active cases, 323 recoveries and eight deaths.
