Ark City

Community members are encouraged to gather at the 9/11 memorial in the parking lot of the former Country Mart grocery store in Arkansas City tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.

A moment of silence will begin at 8:46 a.m., the time of morning 18 years ago when Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Plans include the playing of Taps and a prayer. People are encouraged to bring a memorial item to place at the base of the flag pole in honor of someone affected by the events of 9/11.

The event is sponsored by the Ark City chamber, Visit Ark City, and 1025 The River.

Firefighters and other emergency responders, along with registered members of the public, students and faculty, will climb the 77 steps of the Christy Administration Building at Southwestern College.

The 8 a.m. event pays tribute to 343 Fire Department of New York firefighters, 23 New York Police Department members, and 37 Port Authority police officers who lost their lives 18 years ago at the World Trade Center.

To register, search online for Winfield 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Eventbrite. The registration fee secures a position to participate and helps to raise money that will be donated after the event to FDNY Fire Family Transport.
