It’s my one year anniversary of being the Director of the Burford Theatre and Arkansas City Area Arts Council. As they say, time flies. What a great community and great organization to work for! Even though I live in Dexter, I love Arkansas City. The Burford Theatre is so blessed to have amazing supporters. Thank you for all who have contributed to the Burford renovation, hold a membership to the organization or who have attended events. Also, I would like to thank the Board of Directors for hiring me and placing their trust in me to manage the organization. And I have learned from the best — Ellen Snell, thank you for all your wisdom and guidance.

It’s a time for celebration, the Buford hosted 132 events last year. In June, the building hosted a recorded 19 events including a funeral, wedding reception, two Chamber Coffees, a community celebration and Southcentral Kansas Tourism meeting. Three movies were shown, and an art class was held. An “epic” concert featuring the band EPIC had an amazing crowd. Each week, from 5-7:30 p.m. the Burford Bar hosts Thirsty Thursday with live music and celebrity bartenders. It’s open to all and a nice place to visit with friends.

As we go into our next fiscal year, things are looking good. New balcony seats and a fabulous line up of activities and events are planned.

The Burford will transform into a coffee shop and poetry gathering at 7 p.m. July 19 for the playing of the Dead Poets Society movie followed by a poetry reading. Quinn Carver Johnson, a local poet and recent summer intern at the Burford, will entertain the audience with poetry readings from the movie. Coffee Brakes, a mobile coffee bar, will be available before and after the movie. Admission will be $5 a person.

Do you have a little one who loves to dress up? Bring them in their prince or princess costumes at 2 p.m. July 21 to see the original animated Disney movie Beauty and the Beast. A photo booth will be set up in the lobby for royal pictures. Admission is $3 for children, $5 for adults.

My goal for the Burford is to be the best place for entertainment in South Central Kansas. The Burford is sparkling clean with unique performances/events/activities lead by a professional and friendly staff. Come see what’s behind the marquee.
