Arkansas City and Winfield fire departments responded to a large grass fire Thursday afternoon south of West Kansas Avenue and west of North 15th Street in Ark City.

Ark City police officers also responded to help assist in case of any evacuations. Fire tankers were stationed near residences in the area to protect structures.

The origin of the fire was thought to be near West Linden Avenue, according to scanner communication. Grass fire trucks were able to contain the fire before it spread too close to any houses or trailers.

West Kansas Avenue was also blocked off in the area due to large amounts of smoke billowing over the road. According to a resident who lives in the area, the field was used for hay in the past but hasn't been cut in a while. Black smoke was also seen coming from the area from trash or tires possibly burning.

The blaze started just before 2 p.m. and was logged under control in about an hour.
