Ruptured gas line

Winfield police, fire and the natural gas department responded to a report of a ruptured gas line at Eighth and Millington Tuesday morning.

A subcontractor for the City of Winfield accidentally ruptured a natural gas line Tuesday while installing wireless network equipment at Eighth Avenue and Millington Street on Tuesday.

Workers with SQF, LLC, which has a franchise agreement with the city to install small cell sites for wireless networks, were installing a pole with an antenna when they hit and ruptured the natural gas line, said Winfield City Manager Taggart Wall.

City workers temporarily shut off the gas supply, fixed the pipe and relit pilot lights for affected customers, said Wall. Around 45 homes and businesses were affected.

Any customers who have noticed a change in their natural gas supply should contact the city, said Wall.

Winfield police and fire/EMS personnel also assisted. The affected intersection was blocked off while work was being done.
