Around 40 people gathered on a cold Thursday afternoon at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield to honor a homeless veteran from Wichita who will be buried here.

Funeral services with full military honors for U.S. Navy veteran Ted Martin Phillips were held earlier in the day Thursday at Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita, with the committal ceremony following in Winfield.

According to Phillips’ death notice on the Resthaven website, he was born April 5, 1946, and died Jan. 29, 2020.

Cemetery manager Chet Sweet said that although little is known about Phillips’ life, he knows that Phillips “served his country honorably and faithfully.”

Sweet thanked the people who attended the committal ceremony, saying their presence fulfills the message outside the committal shelter: “No one is ever buried alone, all are buried with honor.”

The short ceremony ended with a rendition of “Taps.”
