Karen Deal, of Winfield, has been named recipient of a $2,500 grant from the P.E.O. Sisterhood’s Program for Continuing Education. Deal was sponsored for the international organization’s grant by Chapter HK, of Winfield.
Deal, a candidate for ordination to the diaconate of the Kansas Diocese of the Episcopal Church, will use the grant to complete her studies at the Bishop Kemper School for Ministry in Topeka. She currently serves in a variety of volunteer capacities at Grace Episcopal Church in Winfield.
Chapter HK is one of three P.E.O. chapters in Winfield, all of which contribute to the organization’s projects that support educational opportunities for women of all ages. In addition to the Program for Continuing Education grants for women who are completing education that has been interrupted, the projects include the Star Scholarship for graduating high school seniors; the Educational Loan Fund to assist women in securing higher education; Scholar Awards for candidates pursuing doctoral-level degrees and post-doctoral education; and the International Peace Scholarship for international women pursuing graduate studies in the United States and Canada. The sisterhood also owns Cottey College, a liberal arts/sciences college for women located in Nevada, Mo.
Chapter HK raises funds toward these projects through its annual flower sales in early spring.
