A benefit for the family of Brett Bannon is hosted by the Cowley County 4-H Shooting Sports Club from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 9 at 13689 182nd Road near Winfield.
The benefit will be a multi-range shooting event, as well as a corn hole tournament.
Bannon passed away Oct. 15. He was a man of faith and a supporter of the outdoor way of life, and the rights of gun ownership. He was a beloved coach of the Cowley County 4-H Shooting Sports Club. He had served nine years with the club as a Kansas 4-H certified instructor as a pistol and muzzleloader coach also serving in leadership on the Parent Committee as the chair.
During his time with the club, he served at the Kansas 4-H State level as a range officer at state level pistol matches. Bannon represented the state of Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports as the state level coach to the Kansas 4-H National Shooting Sports Championships for several years. He acted as an assistant coach for the 2013 Kansas National Air Pistol championship team taking first in the nation, 2014 lead coach for the 2014 Kansas National Small Bore Pistol championship team taking first in the nation, 2018 lead coach for the 2018 Kansas National Hunting Skills Reserve championship team taking second in the nation, and the 2019 Kansas National Small Bore Pistol team taking third in the nation. During his time as a national coach, he coached two national individual champions and two national reserve champions, and was a positive influence to all the youth at the national event.
Bannon also served as a coach for the Cowley County 4-H Shooting Sports National Daisy team (2016-19), with a Cowley youth member receiving the 2019 National Daisy Shooting Education 100 percent score. He helped to lead 22 different Cowley members to this national event in the past four summers.
The proceeds from the benefit will go to his family; wife of the home, a senior high school daughter, and a 12-year-old son who also share his love of the outdoors.
A donation of $25 will provide five range tickets, five raffle drawing tickets and a meal ticket. Individual tickets will be available as well. Shotgun ranges may include skeet and trap, as well as other fun ranges. A 3-D archery course is also a range option. A Corn Hole Knock-Out lane will be set up for fun as well. Note that range equipment and ammunition will not be provided for the shooting ranges; however all NRA and IBO safety rules will be strictly enforced.
In case of inclement weather, the meal and Corn Hole Knock-Out lanes will be moved to the Tisdale Methodist Gymnasium, 17507 U.S.160, in Winfield the same day and times.
A “Raise Your Banner” display is being gathered to sponsor the event by area shooting clubs, 4-H clubs, outdoor organizations and local businesses for the event.
