Cowley hires new director of instrumental music

Dr. Michael Christensen was recently hired as the new director of instrumental music at Cowley College. He previously held teaching positions at Coffeyville Community College, the University of Texas at Brownsville, and the Lubbock Independent School District,

In addition to his teaching experience, Christensen has maintained private lessons studios in the Lubbock, Texas and Oklahoma City areas. 

Christensen has had the opportunity to develop courses within the collegiate curriculum in several areas including music theory, music technology, music appreciation, and has also built collegiate band programs in the concert, jazz and athletic band areas. Most recently, he founded the “Sound Machine” athletic pep band for Coffeyville College and served as arranger of all pep band music.

Christensen has performed and lectured at numerous events and conferences throughout the United States including the Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas Music Educators Association conferences, North American Saxophone Alliance conventions, World Saxophone Congress, and regional and national Music Teachers National Association conventions. He also has served as orchestra director for numerous musical productions including Oliver! the Musical, Beauty and the Beast, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Seussical the Musical.

Christensen received his bachelors and masters degrees at the University of Oklahoma in 2006 and 2012 respectively, and earned his doctorate in music in 2015 from Texas Tech University. He also served in the United States Navy from 2006 to 2010, having been a part of tactical and humanitarian operations in Africa, the Middle East and Haiti. 

While at home, Christensen enjoys working on exciting new pep band arrangements, cooking and is an avid gamer.
