Elena Woodburn, a senior at Winfield High School, has been named a semifinalist in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Her parents are Stephen and Dixie Woodburn of Winfield. She is active in student council, choir, band, Link Crew and many other extracurricular activities.
Woodburn is in the process of applying to Vanderbilt University to study engineering. She hopes one day to reduce the plastic waste in the world to benefit the environment.
Woodburn is one of around 16,000 semifinalists in this year’s National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2020 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
