Summer in the City

Kids ride on a floating alligator Thursday during the VFW Post 3544 free swim at the Winfield Aquatic Center. Around 400 swimmers had taken part as of 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Post 3544 Commander Willard Morris said. A total of 16 volunteers helped with the event, in it’s 16th year. Kansas Third District commander Charlie Cravens, who is also the commander of Arkansas City VFW Post 1254, visited the event for the first time and said it is good for the community, post and VFW in general. This is one of several events the Winfield VFW hosts during the year, including the community Easter egg hunt and a cookout for veterans living at the Kansas Veterans Home. The temperature hovered around 100 degrees Thursday and is expected to remain near triple digits through Saturday, when a front is forecasted to bring — however slight — a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday. Cowley County and the surrounding area remains under an Excessive Heat Warning through Saturday afternoon.
