Rock Lawson

LeGrande Holmes “Rock” Lawson, 78, of Winfield, passed away Sunday morning, March 11, 2018, at Clearwater Nursing and Rehab.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2018, at Miles Funeral Service. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. A visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8. Online condolences can be made at

A memorial has been established in Rock’s name for Winfield Isle of Lights. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Born May 8, 1939, in Pauline, S.C., he was the son of Lafayette Holmes and Beatrice (West) Lawson. He was raised and received his education in Portsmouth, Va., graduating from Craduck High School in 1959. He married his first wife, Elanda, before joining the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country from 1962 to 1966. Following his honorable discharge, he and Elanda made their home in Winfield. The couple had a son, Duane. Elanda preceded him in death.  

He was united in marriage to Sara “Sally” Johnson on Dec. 3, 1994, in Ozark, Ark. The couple made their home in Winfield. Rock worked as a jet engine mechanic for more than 28 years for General Electric. He retired in 2001.  

He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed taking photographs, gardening tomatoes, and collecting and playing with yoyos. He loved to fish, especially at Lake Taneycomo in Branson. He was an avid kite flier and enjoyed making kites with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed building and flying in airplanes and loved to tell people he flew halfway around the world as crew chief.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Rock was preceded in death by a brother, Larry “Pee Wee” Lawson.

His family includes his wife, Sally Lawson, of Winfield; his son, Duane Lawson (Krista), of Harrisonville, Mo.; his step-daughters, Sandra Postelwait (Dale), of Winfield, and Stephanie Kearns (Thomas), of Sterling, Va.; his step-son, Daniel Ratledge (Sheila), of Colo.; his brother, Gary Lawson (Mary Jo), of Chesapeake, Va.; his grandchildren,  Brody Lawson, Cassara (Justin) Mullennax, Chelsie (Kevin) Nyambati, Chantelle St. Clair, Corin Dunkel and Lacey (Daniel) Hughes; his great-grandchildren, Avery, Addilynn, Kayleigh, Lane, Riley, Emmah, Olivia and Meredith; and

many other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
