Janet Hariett McLaughlin, 80, of Winfield, passed away Tuesday night, Sept. 3, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Online condolences can be made at www.milesfuneralservice.com.
Born May 8, 1939, in Dodge City, Janet was the daughter of Harvey and Hazel Skidmore. Janet worked at Henry’s Candies and was a CNA at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter and at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. She owned several restaurants, including the 160 Café in Burden. Janet was well known for the amazing food she and her family prepared. She cooked from the heart, and it showed in every dish she prepared. Customers came from miles away for her chicken-fried steak and pie.
Janet had many friends and would help anyone in need. She and her husband opened the restaurant doors on holidays to feed those who had nowhere to go. In addition to cooking, Janet enjoyed gardening and decorating.
Janet married Allen Chadwell in San Bernardino, Calif. The couple had four children. Mr. Chadwell preceded her in death.
She married Patrick Henry Jr., in 1969 in Dexter. She and Patrick had two children and later divorced.
She married William Eugene McLaughlin in 1978 in Arkansas City.
In addition to her parents Janet was preceded in death by her siblings, LeRoy Sonny Skidmore, Jane Hazel Swaffer, and Donna Unruh; her children, Jerry Lee Chadwell, and Gustava Chadwell; her stepson, Shawn Henry; and a grandson, Matthew McLaughlin.
Her family includes her children, Gary Allen Chadwell, of Winfield, Kathy Chadwell Fisher and husband, Jef, of Jensen Beach, Fla., Candise Henry, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Leora Henry Dye, of Twin Peaks, Calif.; her stepchildren, Pat “Bub” Henry, of Edmond, Okla.; Kathleen Henry Brown, of Callisburg, Texas; Robert Randall and wife, Andy, of Dexter. Dale Randall and wife, Donna, of Dexter, Colbert McLaughlin and wife, Debra, of Winfield, and Justin McLaughlin, of Arkansas City; her siblings, Gary Skidmore and wife, Donna, of Montezuma; Jackie Boyd and husband, Dick, of Montezuma, and Doris Price, of Hutchinson; 26 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
