Joseph Arthur Bly, 72, of Lakewood, Colo., died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, at Bethany Rehabilitation Center.
A graveside service is planned in 2020 in Arkansas City.
Contributions can be made in Joe’s memory to The San Francisco Foundation (sff.org/make-an-impact/give-new) or to the University of Kansas College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (college.ku.edu/ways-to-give).
Joe was born on Sept. 5, 1947 in Arkansas City, to Joseph Arthur and Helen (Wilmot) Bly. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1965 and from the University of Kansas in 1969 with a bachelor of arts degree in Mathematics. He was honored with membership in the Kansas Alpha Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, honorary fraternity in mathematics.
Joe went on to study computer science at New York University, and computer systems and computer architectures at Stevens Institute of Technology.
Joe worked as a computer programmer at AT&T Bell Labs in New Jersey and at Pacific Bell Telephone Co. in California. He moved to Colorado in 2009 and since 2016 has been living in the Bethany Rehabilitation Center.
Joe was a gentle soul with a kind and warm heart. He was an ace programmer, but also had a strong interest in photography and movies — old as well as new.
Joe is survived by his cousins, Sara Bly, of North Plains, Ore., and Nell Bly, of Littleton, Colo., and by his longtime companion, Michael Pirrocco, of New York, N.Y.
