Chester Leroy "Chet" McKnight, 85, of Arkansas City, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019, at his residence surrounded by his family.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Babe Standerfer will officiate. Burial will follow in Parker Cemetery. Pastor Bryan McKnight will officiate the graveside.
Friends can greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Chet was born May 15, 1934, to Clifford L. and Wanda N. (Griffin) McKnight, in Ponca City, Okla. He was reared and educated in Arkansas City. After high school, he joined the U.S. Marines and served until his honorable discharge. Chet then attended and graduated from Cowley College.
He married Hazel Vaden on July 23, 1960, in Winfield. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. Chet worked as a jet engine mechanic for General Electric until his retirement in 1996. Chet loved to build things out of wood. Whether it was cabinets, tables or wagons for the kids, he was always building. He also enjoyed bird watching and enjoyed being outdoors. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his family. Chet was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a grandson, Jason McKnight; sisters, Vivian Bilyeu, Mable Lambert, Mildred Willis, Netta Herschler, and Mary Mackey; and a brother, William "Bill" McKnight.
Survivors include his children, Bryan McKnight and wife, Teresa, Cindy Copeland and husband, Dale, and Randy McKnight and wife, Tanya, all of Arkansas City; grandchildren, Jennifer Edwards, Shephanie Stockton, Lesa Ryan, Krista Jacobs, Kodi Batchelder, and Michelle Miller; great-grandchildren, Kylinn, Tyler, Lylah, Kaden, Jackson, Keeley, Abel, and Lani; great-great-grandson, Grayson Batchelder; and numerous nieces and nephews.
