Elaine Barnthouse

Elaine Rose Barnthouse, 93, of Winfield, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, at Hospice House of Kansas City.

The Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m., and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, both at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to William Newton Memorial Auxiliary or Holy Name Catholic Church. Assurance Cremation Society of Kansas City, Mo., was in charge of cremation.

Elaine was born Oct. 13, 1926, in Wadena, Minn., to Anthony and Regina Groene. She moved to Winfield at age 3 and lived there for 90 years. Elaine graduated from Winfield High School in 1944. After graduation she worked at First National Bank in Winfield (now RCB Bank) until her retirement in 1990. Following retirement, she was an active volunteer for the William Newton Memorial Auxiliary until her death.

She married James L. Barnthouse on Dec. 9, 1951, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. They enjoyed more than 54 years of marriage until James’s death in May 2005.

She cherished all the friends in her life. She especially loved her regular bridge clubs. Elaine was always putting together her puzzles. She was an avid sports fan, watching KU basketball and football, and the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. She was active throughout her life at Holy Name Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Loretta Werner and Margaret Null; and three brothers, Leonard Groene, Raymond Groene and Frances Groene.

She is survived by her three sons, Dr. Michael (Susie) Barnthouse, Dr. Cris (Carrie) Barnthouse, and Dr. Joseph (Dorothy) Barnthouse, all of Leawood; 11 grandchildren, Jeff (Jill) Barnthouse, Brian (Jaye) Barnthouse, John Barnthouse, David Barnthouse, Katherine Barnthouse, Kristi (Ryan) McNearney, Dr. Nick (Maggie) Barnthouse, Jessica Barnthouse, Molly (Bobby) Anderson, Amy Barnthouse, and Betsy Barnthouse; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Groene and Tom Groene; two sisters, Kathleen Lewis and Patricia Deibel; and many nieces and nephews.
