Michael A. Higdon, 68, of Winfield, passed away Friday afternoon, Jan. 10, 2020, at the Kansas Veterans Home.
Graveside services with military honors are at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established in Mike’s name for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Contributions can be made through the funeral home. Online condolences can be made at www.milesfuneralservice.com.
Born Feb. 27, 1951, in Winfield, he was the son of Glen L. and Mildred “Tillie” Marie (Schwantes) Higdon. He was raised and educated in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1969.
Shortly after graduating from high school, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country in Vietnam. He served as a medic and a Green Beret with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. He received many awards for his service, including Bronze Star with Valor Device, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal 2nd Award, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Medic Badge, Parachute Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal with Bronze Star and three Presidential Citations.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Mike returned to Winfield, where he worked for the Winfield Fire Department, Gott Manufacturing and the U.S. Post Office.
Mike was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 and American Legion Post 10.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents.
His family includes his brother, Jeff Higdon and wife, Terri, of Winfield; and nieces, Cathi Wilson, of Oxford, and Tanya Chancellor, of Wellington.
