Cowley County, did you know Southwestern College’s basketball season began Monday?

The men’s basketball team received their championship rings at 6 p.m. prior to their game against Ozark Christian.

Last year, the Builders finished their season sixth in the nation with a record of 28-5 and a Sweet 16 appearance.

This season they are ranked 12th in the nation and number 1 in the KCAC with two returning starters.

Coach Matt O’Brien was named the KCBA Four-Year College Coach of the Year. That is awarded to the best four-year coach in Kansas at all levels.

The Lady Builders are coached by SC Hall of Fame player Whitney Corley. Their first home game is 5 p.m. Nov. 7 as part of the Tara Patterson Memorial.

They have four returning starters, seven new transfer players and seven seniors. One of the seniors is Jazmyne Laskey, who received all-KCAC Honorable Mention last season.

Both teams will have Awareness Night games this season. The first is Military Night Appreciation Nov. 16. Mental Health Awareness is Jan. 15; MLK Night is Jan. 23; and Coaches Against Cancer is Jan. 25.

Both teams deserve community support as they increase our awareness of others’ needs during the season.

Lest I forget, Cameron Hunt is currently playing professionally in Germany. He is having a very successful season thus far.
