In reference to the reopen article in Friday, May 15 issue, I want to thank Rep. Cheryl Helmer for reminding her constituents that unthinking, partisan hate is alive and well in our state’s capital.

Her comments show why it is so hard to achieve “peace, harmony and comfort” in our political system. I am concerned that Rep. Helmer doesn’t fundamentally understand that the most important role of any government is to protect its citizens. Almost every other government in the world, a few dictatorships excepted, is addressing this responsibility during this pandemic.

Most responsible reporting gives Governor Kelly good marks for a thoughtful, measured response to the current crisis in the absence of any national leadership.
