My wife and I have long debated why the Evangelical Christian right continues to support a man as immoral as Donald Trump. To be fooled by Trump in 2016 is excusable but to continue to defend the indefensible is reprehensible.

Ben Howe, writer and film maker, finally offered an explanation which we can understand. The Evangelicals, and I would say most of Trump era “Christians,” have traded their moral values, their moral conviction and moral courage, for political and personal power, or the sense of moral entitlement and power.

They, the silent and complicit, have now found themselves empowered and emboldened, by Trump’s lies and promises. He cannot be called a Christian. He does not understand what it is to be a Christian. He does not exhibit Christian moral values. He does not act as a Christian. If you disagree with these statements then it is you who needs to again read the bible and the principles accredited to Jesus. Many sources have listed Trump’s lack of Christian values and lack of moral behavior.

Most notable, his lack of honesty and profanity in his speech, he lies and is profane and swears like no President before. His treatment and immorality towards women are deplorable, no decent man brags that he can assault women, “grab’em them by the pussy,” cheats on his wives, has sex with porn stars and provides illegal payoffs. He continually degrades women with vile speech and names. His hatred and vitriol towards his perceived enemies continues, Lt. Colonel Vinman, and his brother, being last weeks latest examples.

The Bible says love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you, Trump openly says these are not his values. He has no basic understanding or concern for those less fortunate. Jesus is quoted as saying “give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven,” Trump is greedy and dishonest in his financial dealings and must have no belief in his ability to attain heaven. This is his behavior. When you defend Trump, either privately or openly, ask yourself if you have also traded your moral conviction for power. Power to limit female reproductive choices. Power to exert your political and religious will on the majority. Power to somehow feel superior to non-Christians. Power to claim moral superiority. This is not power, this is just feel good emotion that will be proven to be on the wrong side of history.

Trump and Trumpism is temporary, your moral conviction once lost is lost. I emplore you to get back to your religious values, judge Trump, and all of our elected officials, as you would in previous administrations. Right is still right and wrong is still wrong.
