Thirty years ago my husband and I made a conscious decision to make Winfield our permanent home, to build a business and raise our family here. If I had to make that choice today, I might decide differently.
Property taxes have gotten out of control. We are perpetually being taxed for new or improved facilities. The school board and other community leaders are constantly trying to think up ways to spend money that they do not have. People who had planned to retire here are moving away because they feel they cannot afford the taxes on the home they have lived in for many years. People who are hired to work in local businesses often choose to live in nearby communities where the taxes are lower.
The high school I attended in Concordia was built in 1923. It has been maintained and updated over the years, and is still in use today. There is NO valid reason why USD 465 cannot update our existing buildings for continued use. And as to a new performing arts center, how many performing arts centers does one community need? In addition to the existing facilities at the high school, aren’t there at least two performance venues at Southwestern College and one at Baden Square? Not to mention the Marquee Project.
Citizens of Winfield, please consider carefully before supporting any more “improvement” projects.
