Turnovers costly in Vikings’ loss

Winfield coach Connor Bechard talks to the Vikings during a full timeout Friday night against Coffeyville.

Three building blocks on the Winfield High School boys basketball team played for the final time in Vikings uniforms Friday night after suffering a 61-41 loss to Coffeyville in the Class 4A D-I Sub-state semifinals at Ark City High School.

Jordan Mays, Caleb Weathers and Carlos Moya combined for 29 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in their final time on the court for head coach Connor Bechard.

“Here’s what I told them: The true sign of a champion is somebody that leaves a place better than when they found it,” Bechard said.

“They have been through some dark times in this basketball program. There’s a reason there’s only three of them, because there’s only three of them that are tough enough to stick it out. Winfield basketball is better now — as they take off their jerseys for the last time — than the first time they put it on. We went this year as our seniors went.”

The third-seeded Vikings (8-11) are used to playing bigger, stronger and faster teams from their battles in the AV-CTL D-III. But it appeared that few teams were as quick as the Golden Tornado (11-10), who forced 24 turnovers, 17 of them coming on steals.

“We play some really good teams. That might be the quickest team we have played,” Bechard said. “We knew that coming in — the pressure.”

Coffeyville scored the first seven points until Weathers buried a 3-pointer from the right wing with 3:55 left in the first period. But the Tornado went on a 10-0 run, capped by a three-point play by Jaylen Logan.

Weathers sank another trey, but the 2-of-11 effort was all the Vikings could muster in the opening eight minutes.

Weathers, who finished with a team-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, buried another trey to start the Vikings on a 5-0 spurt and cut the deficit to eight to start the second quarter. Coffeyville led 26-13 at halftime.

The Vikings responded in a big way coming out of the break. Weathers sank another 3-pointer, Mays scored on a layup on one end after blocking a shot on the other end, Jack Mull hit a short jumper and Weathers sank a 3-pointer from the left corner to force a Coffeyville timeout.

Winfield cut the deficit to six just minutes later, but the Tornado responded with an 11-0 run to end the period, and a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter for a 21-0 run.

“Really, we handled it pretty well for 27, 28 minutes,” Bechard said. “That spurt at the end of the third, we cut it to seven and call a timeout, then they really amped up the pressure after that.”

Mays finished with 14 points and six rebounds for the Vikings, who shot 35.9 percent (14 of 39) from the floor.

Trevaughn Myrie led all scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Tornado, who shot 40.7 percent (22 of 54) for the game. Cedric Kelley added 12 points and five steals, while Andrew Knight chipped in 10 points.
