EMPORIA — The Winfield High School girls golf team is off to a solid start to the season.
The Lady Vikings brought home five top-10 medals Tuesday afternoon at the Emporia Invitational, placing second to the host Lady Spartans.
Winfield finished with a team 176, just four strokes out of first place.
The finish set the school record for team score in a nine-hole meet, according to WHS coach Dave Bertholf. The previous record was held by the 2013 team of Jessie Burtnett, Kyndal Dutton, Abby Bertholf, Tysha Henning and Emma Hottinger.
“We played well for our first meet,” Bertholf said.
“The host school beat us by four strokes, but we were 16 strokes better than we were at the same tournament last year. I think we have a chance to be a pretty good team.”
Elly Bertholf, one of two seniors on the team, fired a 40 to finish second in the meet, three strokes behind individual medalist Avary Eckert of Emporia.
Juniors Celine Mendoza and Chaney Littell both carded 44s to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Freshman Carley Littell (48) earned a medal in her first high school outing by placing eighth, while sophomore Savanna Nickum (48) took 10th.
Junior Dalin Bartel wasn’t far off the pace, finishing 12th with a 49.
