STERLING — The Southwestern College football team put a scare into No. 23-ranked Sterling, but the Moundbuilders were unable to hold onto a late lead and lost 20-17 in overtime in KCAC action Saturday.

The Builders (4-5, 4-4 KCAC) scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to take a 17-10 lead into the fourth quarter, but a huge play turned the momentum in favor of the host Warriors (7-1, 7-1).

Shaheem Sanders caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cedrick Phillips with 1:37 remaining in regulation. Peter Slysko booted home the extra point to tie the game 17-17.

The Warriors started overtime with the ball at the Southwestern 25-yard line, but gained just six yards before Slysko booted a 35-yard field goal for the lead.

The Builders took the ball at the Sterling 25, but only moved one yard before sending out Freddy Botello to attempt a 41-yard field goal to tie the game again. But Botello’s kick missed wide to the right and Sterling celebrated the victory.

Sterling took a 7-0 lead on a 29-yard TD pass from Phillips to Eric Butler midway through the second quarter. Botello booted a 23-yard field goal with 4:10 left in the first half to make it a 7-3 game at the break.

Jaquils Coleman gave the Builders the lead with a 6-yard touchdown run on Southwestern’s first drive of the second half. Slysko added a 23-yard field goal, but the Builders went up 17-10 when Keyshawn Wyatt scored on a 9-yard TD run. Wyatt finished with 168 yards on 30 carries.

Phillips completed 20 of 43 passes for 335 yards, with two interceptions. Butler hauled in 10 passes for 161 yards.

The Builders return home Saturday to face Avila. The Eagles (5-3, 5-3) squeaked past Tabor 19-14 on Saturday.
