McPHERSON — The Southwestern College volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match Tuesday night on the road, falling to McPherson 25-23, 25-16, 18-25, 18-25, 15-5.
The Lady Builders (13-5, 1-1) took a 13-match winning streak into the battle against the Lady Bulldogs (9-7, 2-1), a team that won more than 30 matches a year ago and were picked to finish near the top of the KCAC again.
McPherson broke a 22-22 deadlock by scoring three of the final four points of the opening set. The Lady Bulldogs outhit Southwestern 16-10.
After McPherson cruised in the second set, the Lady Builders stormed back with back-to-back wins to send the match into a fifth set.
The Lady Builders converted just 7 percent of the hitting opportunities in the best-to-15 fifth set, while McPherson posted a match-high 54 percent.
Junior Kanami Ellis, the reigning KCAC Attacker of the Week, set her career high for the second week in a row with 17 kills. Sophomore Kiralyah Jones also reached double-digits with 10.
Four of Southwestern’s five losses this season were in five sets.
The Lady Builders return home at 2 p.m. Saturday against Bethel.
The Lady Threshers (4-12, 0-3) won the first meeting between the two teams on Aug. 20 in a nonconference season opener 18-25,25-20,25-18,20-25,15-13.
