GEARY, Okla. — Junior Trig Tennant came home with a third-place medal and two other Arkansas City High School grapplers earned top-six medals Saturday at the two-day 76th annual Geary Invitational.

The prestigious tourney, dubbed the oldest wrestling tournament in the nation, drew 23 teams from five states.

Tennant, ranked third in Kansas 5A, captured the third-place medal at 145 pounds, bouncing back from an 8-2 loss to two-time national champion John Wiley of Mustang, Okla., Tennant reeled off six consecutive victories to secure the bronze medal.

Senior Gavin Lough also had an opportunity to come home with a third-place medal, but fell to Austin Cooley of Piedmont, Okla., in the 182-pound third-place bout. Lough, ranked fourth in 5A, finished fourth with a 4-2 record.

Senior Nicholas Bahm earned the medal for sixth place at 170, compiling a 2-3 record.

Ranked fifth in 5A, Bahm advanced to the championship quarterfinals, but a 4-0 loss to Zeke Coleman of Choctaw, Okla., sent him to the backside. Coleman captured the 170-pound title Dec. 14 at the Perry Tournament of Champions.

Junior heavyweight Maximus Shannon just missed the medal round, finishing 2-2.

Shannon, ranked third in 5A, dropped a 6-2 decision to Marquonn Journey of Choctaw in the medal match. Journey captured the title Dec. 22 at the Kansas City Stampede.

Junior Kael Pappan also was one victory from standing on the medal podium, going 2-2 at 120.

Ranked fourth in 5A, Pappan dropped a 3-0 decision to Nate Becker of Edmond North, Okla., in the medal match.

Senior Deston Miller, ranked third at 195, was unable to compete due to injury.

“Deston tweaked his knee a little bit at Thursday’s dual with Derby, and this is not a good tournament to test an injury,” ACHS coach Greg Buckbee said.
