8-man teams eliminated

Dexter High School senior Arik Artherton, bottom, gobbles up a fumble Thursday night in the Cedar Vale/Dexter Spartans’ 46-30 loss to Caldwell in the 8-man I Week 9 playoffs at Dexter High School.

ROSALIA — It wasn’t what the Udall High School football team was hoping for, but the Eagles ended the season on a winning note — something few teams can say.

The Eagled pulled away in the second half Thursday night to defeat Flinthills 45-18 in an 8-man I Week 9 consolation game.

Only the top four placers in the 8-man District standings qualified for a Week 9 State playoff game. The Wildcats (4-5) finished fifth in the 8-man I District 2, while the host Mustangs (1-8) were sixth in 8-man I District 1.

Udall piled up 249 yards of total offense, 172 of it on the ground.

“It was a great bounce back win for our kids after last week’s embarrassing performance at Oxford,” UHS coach Wyatt Williams said. “We played without senior running back and defensive end Alan Garton, who was injured in the Oxford game.”

Sophomore quarterback Trent Whiteman led the ground game with 80 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. He also was 9-of-14 passing for 77 yards and two TDs, with no interceptions.

Junior Dylan Bishop added 68 yards and a score on 20 carries. Senior Trevor Whiteman and freshman David Otis also found the end zone. Otis added 45 yards on three receptions, while Trevor Whiteman and junior Isaac Jirak caught touchdown passes.

Trevor Whiteman, Isaac Patteson, Alan Garton, Tyler Larson and Alex Spencer were listed as seniors on the roster playing their final game for Udall.

“Trent Whiteman had a great game at quarterback, and the kids showed a lot of resiliency to bounce back and play hard,” Williams said.

“Finishing the season at 4-5 was not what we expected, but I am proud of the kids for overcoming a lot of adversity throughout the season.

“We started the season with 25 players, but due to injury, an FFA trip, and a lack of commitment, we only suited up 14 players against Flinthills. It is hard saying goodbye to our seniors, but it was great sending them out with a victory.”
