Playoff hopes tumble in loss to first-place KWU

Sophomore College sophomore guard Destiny Stewart shoots a 3-pointer Thursday night against Kansas Wesleyan in Stewart Field House.

The Southwestern College women’s basketball team suffered a dent in its KCAC playoff hopes in a 72-67 loss Thursday night to first-place and No. 19-ranked Kansas Wesleyan in Stewart Field House.

The Lady Builders (11-14, 9-12 KCAC) are among six teams in a tight logjam for three remaining playoff spots for the KCAC Tournament. Southwestern is tied with Bethel (12-14, 9-12)  for eighth place, a half-game behind seventh-place Friends (12-15, 10-12) and one game behind sixth-place Oklahoma Wesleyan (14-11, 10-11). However, coming up from behind are McPherson (12-14, 8-13) and Ottawa (8-15, 8-13), tied for 10th.

Southwestern led by one, 13-12, after the first quarter, but the Lady Coyotes (22-5, 18-3) turned on their explosive offense, building a lead that reached 10. Southwestern answered the run with six of the final eight points of the half to cut the deficit to 35-29 at the break.

KWU came out of the break shooting 10 of 17 in the third quarter.

The Lady Builders continued to make shots to stay within striking distance, finishing the third quarter 8 of 18 from the field, but trailed 56-46 entering the fourth quarter.

Southwestern rallied to cut the deficit all the way down to two points on a 3-pointer by sophomore Sarah Alsabbaheen and a pair of free throws from Rylee Barnes.

The Lady Coyotes halted the momentum with a timeout, but only briefly. Southwestern eventually tied the game 65-65 on a basket by former Arkansas City High standout Destiny Stewart with 1:55 remaining.

Courtney Heinen buried a 3-pointer on the other end, however, and didn’t trail again.

Stewart and junior Ashley Carrillo led Southwestern with 12 points apiece. Junior Sydney Webb added 10 points.

The Lady Builders play at 5 p.m. today at Bethany.
