Cowley College freshman guard Shontrice Austin buried a long 3-pointer at the buzzer Saturday, sending an elated women’s basketball team to a wild 72-70 victory against Hutchinson at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Things looked bleak for the Lady Tigers (15-3, 5-3 Jayhawk East) when Abby Ogle hit a 15-foot jumper to give the Lady Blue Dragons (14-2, 6-1 Jayhawk West) a 70-69 lead with only 1.4 seconds remaining.

After a Cowley timeout, Milena Fromming inbounded the ball to Austin, whose rainbow shot from NBA 3-point range swished through the hoop as the buzzer sounded, sending Cowley players spilling onto the floor in celebration.

Austin finished with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go with seven assists for the Lady Tigers, who shot 50 percent from the floor.

“Shontrice was really aggressive the entire night and played with a lot of confidence,” Cowley coach Todd Clark said. “The ball found her there at the end.”

The Lady Tigers led 20-19 at the end of the first quarter and 40-33 at halftime.

Cowley nursed a 56-50 lead into the fourth quarter and did not trail until the final minute.

“It would have been a painful game to lose after leading most of the night,” Clark said.

Seanna Boltz, the nation’s leader in 3-pointers, added to her lead by going 4 of 8 from the arc in a 14-point effort, while Jayden Marlnee added a 13-points, 10-rebound double-double.

Brooklyn Betham, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, finished with 18 points and six rebounds for the Lady Blue Devils, while Ogle added 14 points, five rebounds and four steals.

After facing all the Jayhawk West schools once already, Cowley will finish the regular season with 12 straight games against Jayhawk East opponents.

With no time to rest, the Lady Tigers played Monday night at home against Coffeyville. The Lady Red Ravens (15-3, 5-3) have an identical record as Cowley after a 67-58 victory Saturday against Dodge City.

Coffeyville is led by 6-1 sophomore Faith Simpson, who is averaging 17.8 points per game since joining the club after an All-American campaign as a member of the volleyball team.

“Coffeyville has got a lot of pieces and Faith Simpson is a load inside,” Clark said. “We will need to dig in and battle.”
