No. 9-ranked Cowley College softball team found runs tough to come by Friday at home against Connors State (Okla.). The Lady Tigers dropped the opener 8-4 and lost the nightcap 3-1 at Lady Tigers Field.
The Cowgirls (12-1) have held opponents to four or fewer runs in all but two games this season.
"Connors provided good nonconference games for us," Cowley coach Jenny Hoyt said. "We left too many runners on base in the first game and just didn't get some balls to drop for us in the second game."
The Lady Tigers (10-9) led 4-3 after three innings of the opener before Connors State scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and two more in the sixth.
Jessica Collins and Bailey Aldridge both homered for the Cowgirls.
Freshman third baseman Skyler Maga led Cowley by going 2 for 3 with two home runs and three runs batted in, while LaTaylah Perez and Lindsey Webb each went 2 for 3. Tarin Dubler allowed nine hits and three earned runs in five innings of work to earn the win for the Cowgirls. Mikey Nelson pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.
Cowley sophomore Logan Wenzel (5-4) took the loss after allowing 13 hits and six earned runs in six innings. Madison LeWellen worked around three walks in a scoreless seventh inning.
Macie Buckaloo walked four batters in two innings for Connors State in the nightcap before Mikey Nelson (7-1) took over in the circle, tossing five scoreless innings despite walking five.
Cowley managed only three hits in the loss.
Freshman Ashton Friend (1-3) was the hard-luck loser in game two, giving up only four hits and one run while going the distance.
After going 7-5 while playing 12 straight home games, the Lady Tigers play a 2 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at the Oklahoma Wesleyan junior varsity.
"We need to get away from home and string some wins together to get our confidence back," Hoyt said.
