ANDALE — The Winfield High School softball team had a tough draw to the Class 4A Regional Tournament.
The Lady Vikings held the No. 8 seed and a semifinal game against ninth-seeded Towanda-Circle, an AV-CTL D-III nemesis that Winfield run-ruled twice in an April 18 home doubleheader.
The Lady Thunderbirds had the last laugh, squeezing out a 5-4 triumph that ended Winfield’s season.
“It was a good game,” WHS coach Rhonda Tackett said. “It went back an fourth until the end.”
The team was playing with heavy hearts following the recent death of friend and classmate Jace Kilpatrick. The scorebook wasn’t kept and statistics were not available.
The Lady Vikings were in the midst of a six-game winning streak until being swept in a May 2 twinbill at Augusta and dropping both games of the annual home-and-away series with arch rival Arkansas City.
A bright spot was and hope for the future came from freshman Mikayla Konrade, who hit a home run for the Lady Vikings (11-10).
Tessa Ruggles was the lone senior on the young team.
“She has been a four-year player,” Tackett said. “We return everyone else next year.”
Circle lost 12-0 to Andale/Garden Plain in the tourney title game.
