A Sparkling Debut

Cowley College heavyweight Seth Stroble, a freshman from Independence, works his way to a pin of Neosho County freshman Nick Feely during Thursday night’s dual at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

A large crowd turned out Thursday night to show its support for the Cowley College wrestling program in its first-ever home match against Neosho County at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The Tigers did not disappoint, defeating the Panthers 36-13.

Cowley won four of seven matches against the Panthers and were awarded wins in three other open weight classes.

“It meant a lot to us to come out and do well,” Cowley coach Beau Vest said. “As a team it was important for us to get the win. We had great fan support and wanted to put on a good show for them.”

Earning wins for the Tigers were Blake Johnson at 165 pounds and Seth Stroble at heavyweight. Stroble needed only 56 seconds to pin Nick Feely in the final match.

“Seth went out there and did what we expected him to do,” Vest said.

Kirell Gordon recorded a 9-4 decision against Brayden Collins at 174, and a 6-2 win by Jake Parker against Austin Jacobs at 197.

Bethany Swede Open

LINDSBORG — The Tigers saw several wrestlers advance to the consolation semifinals Saturday before being eliminated from the Bethany Swede Open.

“I feel we are showing some progression,” Vest said. “We had guys pick up some wins, which will hopefully get their confidence going.”

Leading the way for the Tigers was freshman Bryce Shults, who went 4-2 at 149 pounds. Damon Hail (125), Tyler West (133), Kevin Robinson (133), Braden O’Donnell (141) and James Johnson (197) each went 3-2 at the tournament.

“As a coaching staff, we are starting to figure out what certain guys need to be doing to win matches,” Vest said.

Saturday’s meet consisted of primarily NAIA and junior college schools.

The Tigers will make a step up in competition this Saturday at the Nebraska-Kearney Open in Kearney, Neb.

“We hope to see continued progress as this will be one of the toughest tournaments we go to,” Vest said.
