Lady Bulldogs secure 2019-20 rubber match

Arkansas City High School senior Maya Burley, left, and Winfield sophomore Nevaeh Green go up for a rebound with 3:39 remaining Tuesday night in The Dawg Pound.

Two teams badly in need of a boost converged Tuesday night in The Dawg Pound for Cowley Clash II between the arch rival Arkansas City and Winfield girls basketball teams.

It was the host Lady Bulldogs with the boost, at the expense of the Lady Vikings in a 40-34 home victory.

In a sense, it was the rubber match between the two teams.

The Lady Vikings hounded Ark City 61-27 on Dec. 6 at Cowley Clash I in Winfield, but the Lady Bulldogs gained a measure of revenge with a 47-43 victory in an overtime thriller on Feb. 1 in the third-place game of the Mulvane Wildcat Classic.

This one was nearly as tight as the Mulvane game.

The Lady Vikings (5-10) jumped out to a 6-1 lead capped when senior Emily Randall banged in a 3-pointer from the left wing. Randall, who poured in a game-high 23 points, knocked down another trey from the top of the key for a six-point Winfield lead. The Lady Vikings were just 3 of 11 from the floor in the first eight minutes, but held an 11-5 rebound advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs (3-12) opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to build a 13-9 lead.

Randall hit a wide-open trey from the top of the key to thwart that run, but Ark City senior Espy Daniels responded with back-to-back 3-pointers.

Ark City nursed a 21-18 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was a lesson in futility. The teams combined for just six points on 2-of-17 shooting from the floor.

The teams went the first 2:20 of the quarter without scoring before WHS senior Emmah Sultz banged in a long 3-pointer from the left wing. Ark City didn’t score until just 1:41 remained in the period when Kamri Pool took an inbounds pass for a short jumper.

Much of the fourth quarter was spent at the foul line, where the teams combined for 14 personal fouls and 8 of 17 from the line. However, the Lady Bulldogs scored the first 10 points of the stanza and never looked back.

Winfield used an 8-0 run capped by another Randall 3-pointer to pull to within four, 36-32, with 1:14 remaining.

Forced to foul, the Lady Vikings could only watch as Ark City hit 4 of 4 from the line in the final 35 seconds to secure the victory.

Daniels was 3 of 4 from the arc and 5 of 8 overall, finishing with 14 points and five steals for the Lady Bulldogs, who finished 10 of 17 from the floor. Braylee Ruyle added seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while Elise Brewer and Ellie Messenger chipped in six points apiece.

Randall finished 4 of 6 from 3-point range and 7 of 14 overall to go with five steals. Isabel Jellings grabbed 11 of her game-high 12 rebounds in the first half for the Lady Vikings, who were 11 of 23 from the line.
