SALINA — Ellie Messenger and Landry Biddle saw their undefeated streak to start the season come to an end on a beautiful day for tennis Saturday at a very competitive Salina Central Invitational.

Arkansas City’s senior duo was ranked third entering the tourney and left the meet with the third-place medals.

The Lady Bulldogs placed sixth in the eight-team meet, won by McPherson.

Messenger and Biddle opened with an 8-3 victory against the Maize tandem of Jolei Hertzel and Riley Wertz, and followed that up with an 8-2 quarterfinal win against Lizzy Franco and Katen Putnam of Salina South.

The Lady Bulldog duo met No. 2 seed CeAnna Allen & Perrin Schneider of McPherson in the semifinals, putting up a gallant battle before falling in overtime 8-7 (5).

Messenger and Biddle shook off their first loss of the season to claim third place with an 8-1 pasting of McPherson’s No. 2 doubles team of Maddie Dobson and Taylor Berger.

Illiana Armbrust and Alexxa Nunemaker of Salina South went on to capture the title with an 8-5 triumph against Allen and Schneider.

ACHS senior Haley Hain placed 11th in singles competition, defeating Lily Wilson of Valley Center 8-5 to finish 2-2 on the day.

Ark City’s No. 2 doubles tandem of Justise Mills and Aleeyah Winegarner finished 14th after a heartbreaking 8-7 (6) setback at the hands of Ruth Hockenbarger and Yasmine Bueno of Topeka West.

Junior Raizel Carter went 0-4 in singles play, but put up tough battles in an 8-5 loss to Alyssa Bowlin of Valley Center and an 8-6 setback to Bella Elliot of Topeka West.

Callie Sanborn of the host Lady Mustangs took the singles title with an 8-3 win against McPherson’s Petty Huerta.
