Goddard High School freshman Skyler Hernandez scored a golden goal on a breakaway with 1:55 remaining in extra time Tuesday afternoon to lift the Lions to a 4-3 victory against the Arkansas City High School boys soccer team at Bulldog Stadium.
“Goddard is a very good technical side, they moved the ball very well and created a lot of goal scoring opportunities,” ACHS coach Andy Stone said. “In particular, I thought our entire defense was excellent in holding them at bay for large portions of the game.”
The game was tied 1-1 at halftime and 2-2 at the end of regulation.
“It was a thrilling open end-to-end game, which could have ultimately been won by either side,” Stone said. “Over the course of the game, there were three lead changes, so I am sure it was a fun game to watch for the fans in attendance.”
The Lions (3-10, 1-3 AV-CTL D-II) struck first on a breakaway by freshman Yoseph Espinoza from about 10 yards out midway through the first half. But the Bulldogs (2-11, 0-4) knotted it a minute later on a shot by senior Luis Madrigal from 19 yards away.
That was the start of three consecutive goals by the Bulldogs. Junior Leon Mena chipped it in from close range three minutes into the second half. Carson Solomon made it 3-1 a bit more than two minutes later and Ark City had a 3-1 lead.
The Lions answered with goals by Gabe Villegas and Dominic Zuniga to send the game into overtime.
Gabriel dos Santos recorded 13 saves in goal for the Bulldogs. Ryan Bay stopped three shots in goal for the Lions, who outshot Ark City 33-7.
“We are still a very inexperienced team, with a lot of our players still learning the game,” Stone said. “I believe we are improving with each game, so overall I am pleased with how the boys played.”
The Bulldogs are home Thursday to face Mulvane (3-10) in nonleague action.
“After a run of bad results, it would be easy for these young men to get down on themselves and each other, so I was really encouraged with the character, determination and work rate displayed tonight by the team,” Stone said.
