Morin puts the Vikings on the board
Winfield High School senior Steele Morin puts the finishing touches on a 19-yard touchdown run with 9:25 left in the first quarter Friday night against El Dorado at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.

For the first time perhaps ever, there will be a rematch of the Cowley Cup participants.

While the Winfield Vikings were romping to a 37-0 shutout of El Dorado on Friday night at Richard L. Jantz Stadium, the Arkansas City Bulldogs were dismantling Ulysses 55-17 four hours to the west.

Therefore, next Friday night, in the KSHSAA Class 4A Regionals, it will be Ark City at Winfield, Part II.

After a hiccup at Wellington and last weekend's loss to Buhler, the Vikings restored order with a vengeance in the second meeting this season against El Dorado.

Winfield led 17-0 after the first quarter and maintained that lead into halftime before erupting for 20 third-quarter points.

Steele Morin opened the scoring with a 19-yard run and Austin Bryant booted a 30-yard field goal. The Vikings capped the first quarter with a 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback KC Crandall to Chance Price.

Ace Singvongsa recovered a fumble for a touchdown on the first play of the second half, just 16 seconds into the third quarter.

Crandall added a pair of third-quarter touchdowns for the Vikings, who finished with 298 rushing yards while holding the Wildcats to 71.

Meanwhile, in a land far, far away, the Bulldogs opened a 34-0 lead en route to the blowout at Ulysses.

Tailback Braiden Mattocks set up his 2-yard touchdown run with a 46-yard scamper to the Ulysses 7-yard line and the rout was on.

The Bulldogs (3-6) scored on all four first-quarter possessions.

Ark City recovered an onside kick after the score and marched 49 yards, with the help of two Ulysses penalties before freshman quarterback Gabe Welch plunged in on a 1-yard keeper and it was 14-0 just 4:06 into the game.

Walker Moulton intercepted Ulysses quarterback Jett Moyer and the Bulldogs cashed that in seven plays later when Welch found fellow freshman Cadon Clark on a 17-yard scoring strike.

Welch hit Haden O'Toole on a 16-yard pass to set up first-and-goal, and Mattocks bullied his way into the end zone from the 6 to make it 28-0 with 46 seconds left in the first quarter.

Welch added a 20-yard touchdown pass to O'Toole with 4:54 left in the first half for a 34-0 lead.

The Tigers finally answered after Oscar Martinez intercepted Welch at the Ulysses 15, and Moyer later found Martinez on a 40-yard touchdown pass with 53 seconds left in the half.

Tommy Pacheco added a 14-yard TD run and Daigen Moulton hauled in a 23-yard TD pass from Welch.
