NEWTON — The Southwestern College men’s cross country team captured the title Saturday at the Tabor Cottonwood Challenge on the Harvey County East Lake course.
The all-KCAC matchup showed great promise for the Builders as they continue to prepare for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in November.
The men finished strong, finishing with 31 points.
Freshman Adam Hernandez placed third in the 8K race in 27 minutes, 43.37 seconds.
Freshman John Davila finished fifth (27:59.13), closely followed by teammates Maliki Pope and Patrick Matson, who were seventh and eighth, respectively. Tumiso Tidimane was 11th, barely missing the top 10 by a quarter of a second.
The Lady Builders placed third with 61 points.
Senior Bailey Walser finished fifth in the 5K race in 20:01.78.
Former Winfield High School standout Bri Hulse cracked the top 10 (20:58.73). Less than a minute behind her, Daegiona Wilson battled to the finish line in 21:36.22, ahead of teammates Tierney Sutton and Kailey Koomen.
“I’m content with the performances because both teams came ready to compete and they finished strong,” Southwestern coach Garrett Young said.
The Builders compete on Oct. 12 at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open.
