WELLINGTON — It was practically a given that Monday afternoon’s Class 4A Regional Championships would come down to the Winfield High School girls golf team and nemesis Buhler.

The two AV-CTL D-III teams seem to play off one another.

This time around, it was the Lady Vikings who won the battle, but Buhler won the war.

The Lady Crusaders shot a team 366 to win the team title by eight strokes over Winfield.

Winfield senior Elly Bertholf, though, captured her second consecutive Regional title.

Bertholf fired an 11-over 81 to take home the gold medal by one stroke over Jaela Albers of third-place Andale.

The top three teams, along with the top six individuals on non-qualifying teams advanced to the KSHSAA Class 4A State Championships next Monday and Tuesday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

“We have gone back and forth with Buhler this season and it looks like we will have another battle at state,” WHS coach Dave Bertholf said. “(Buhler’s) 3 and 4 both played really well.”

The Lady Vikings were no slouches.

Winfield took home three individual medals to go with their second-place trophy.

Junior Chaney Littell carded a 91 to finish seventh. Junior Celine Mendoza shot a 99 to place 10th.

Junior Dalin Bartel was 13th with a 103, one stroke and one spot ahead of sophomore teammate Savanna Nickum — all five Lady Vikings placed in the top 14.

Bertholf opened with back-to-back bogeys, but saved par on five consecutive holes, one of them being a birdie on No. 4. She was just 2-over par at the turn before running into problems.

A double-bogey on No. 10 and triple-bogey on No. 12 got Bertholf off to a rocky start on the back side, but she recorded her second birdie of the day on the par-3 No. 17, closing with a 9-over 44.

“Elly had a good day. She played great most of the day,” Dave Bertholf said. “She had a rough stretch on the back nine, but her birdie on 17 was huge.”

Bertholf helped the Lady Vikings to a second straight 4A Regional title last year and a third-place finish at State with the sixth-place medal at the Big Show.

She was third in the Region and tied for 17th at State in her sophomore year, and tied for 11th for the 2017 4A Regional runners-up before placing ninth at State on a team that just missed a top-three State finish by placing fourth.
