DEXTER — The Cedar Vale/Dexter boys basketball team used a strong second half Tuesday night to defeat Sedan 49-42 in the South Central Border League opener for both teams.

The Spartans (7-1, 1-0 SCBL) trailed 21-17 at halftime, but used a 16-6 third-quarter run to pull ahead 33-27 entering the fourth quarter.

From there, it was a matter of hitting free throws, and Cedar Vale/Dexter did just that, connecting on 12 of 15 down the stretch and 22 of 26 in the second half.

Senior Arik Artherton sank three freebies when he was fouled on the way to the basket in the third quarter, where the Spartans were 10 of 11 from the line.

Senior Clayton Henderson went 8 of 8 from the line in the second half and finished with 14 points. Senior Elijah Helpingstine also scored 14 points for the Spartans, who were 23 of 29 from the stripe overall.

Senior Devin Catlin, Cedar Vale/Dexter’s leading scorer, was held to two points in the first half, but drained 9 of 11 from the line after halftime in an 11-point effort.

Kaden Walker buried three shots from 3-point range and led all scorers with 15 points for the Blue Devils (4-4, 0-1), who were just 5 of 17 from the line. Dameion Hatten added 14 points for Sedan, but was just 4 of 12 from the stripe.

The Cedar Vale/Dexter girls fell to Sedan 65-39. No other information was reported.

South Haven 71, Caldwell 65, OT

CALDWELL — South Haven High School sophomore Nathan Hilt came off the bench with five points in overtime Tuesday night, leading the Cardinals to a huge 71-65 upset at arch rival Caldwell in the SCBL opener for both teams.

“Super proud of my team for doing the little things and finishing the game the way we know how,” SHHS coach Robert Weber said. 

The Cardinals (4-5, 1-0 SCBL) led 33-29 at halftime, only to see Caldwell pull ahead 48-45 entering the fourth quarter. South Haven sank 5 of 8 from the foul line in the fourth period and got a key 3-pointer from junior Cooper Wolf, who scored 11 of his game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

The teams were tied 61-61 at the end of regulation, but South Haven held the Bluejays (6-2, 0-1) to a 3-pointer and free throw by Caleb Noyes in the extra session.

Wolf finished 13 of 15 from the line for the Cardinals, who were 21 of 24 from the stripe overall.

Junior Hunter Meyer buried a pair of third-quarter 3-pointers and scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half for South Haven. Sophomore Tucker Locke drained three second-quarter treys for nine points, while Hilt finished with eight.

LA Thompson finished with 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the line for the Bluejays, who were 19 of 31 from the line overall. Noyes and Marshall Ward added 12 points apiece for Caldwell.

ROSALIA — A huge fourth-quarter rally came up short for the Central of Burden boys basketball team Tuesday night in a 73-66 loss at Flinthills in the SCBL opener for both teams.

The Raiders (2-6, 0-1 SCBL) trailed 33-26 at halftime and 57-38 entering the fourth quarter, but posted 28 points down the stretch.

Senior Lane Toon poured in 37 points on 15-of-32 shooting from the floor and 7 of 11 from the foul line while grabbing 12 rebounds in a double-double for Central.

Junior Logan Braun had nine points, sophomore Tony Brogan had eight points and 11 boards, and sophomore Garret Toon chipped in seven points to go with 12 rebounds for the Raiders, who were 13 of 21 from the line.

Central outrebounded Flinthills 41-33.

Hunter Lowmaster recorded a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Mustangs (4-4, 1-0), who finished 15 of 25 from the line. Issac Bugner had 21 points, including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc, and Nate Becker tossed in 12 points for Flinthills.
