Wood, Gage punch tickets to State meet

Arkansas City High School junior Bella Wood returns to the State meet for the second consecutive year after firing a 93 to finish ninth Tuesday afternoon at the Class 5A Regional Championships at Cherry Oaks Golf Course.

CHENEY — Arkansas City High School senior Camri Gage will end her high school golf career at the KSHSAA Class 5A State Championships.

She’ll have company.

Gage and junior Bella Wood both punched their ticket to the Big Show at the Class 5A Regional Championships on Tuesday at Cherry Oaks Golf Course.

The top three teams, along with the top five individuals from non-qualifying teams, advanced to the State meet, set for Oct. 21-22 at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

Wood took the final individual qualifying spot last year as a sophomore, placing 15th as the lone State representative for the Lady Bulldogs. Gage tied for 22nd and missed the cut.

Not this time.

Wood fired a 93 to finish ninth, her season-best for an 18-hole tournament. She shot a 94 on Oct. 3 at the Hutchinson Invitational.

She opened by shooting par on four of the first nine holes, but was tripped up on the par-4 No. 8 hole, needing 10 strokes that left her with a 48 at the turn.

She only recorded par twice on the back nine, but a birdie on No. 16 — one of just two golfers on the day to birdie the par-4 hole — to shave three strokes.

Gage shot par on No. 5, but the par-5 No. 9 hole was her stumble, settling for a 4-over 9 that left her with a 51 at the turn. However, par on Nos. 11 and 15 helped her to shave four strokes on the backside and finish in a tie for 13th with a 98.

The rest of the team was comprised of freshmen.

Breanna Ruyle was six strokes better on the back nine with a 58, finishing 37th overall with a 122. Kamryn Mendoza was also six strokes better with a 64 after the turn and placed 41st with a 134. Tayeah Rich was 44th with a 174.

Sophomore Josie Munson, who finished 36th last season in her first taste of high school golf, had to withdraw from competing this year.
