WICHITA — Arkansas City High School senior AJ Wilson, the reigning Class 4A State champion in the 400-meter run, will have an opportunity to make it two State titles in a row next weekend at the KSHSAA Class 5A State Championships at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.

Wilson was the lone gold medalist for the Bulldogs on Thursday at the Class 5A Regional Championships at Wichita Northwest High School.

Bishop Carroll swept the team titles with relative ease — the boys won by 47 points over runner-up Maize, while the Lady Golden Eagles won by 42 points over second-place Andover Central.

The Bulldogs finished seventh in the nine-team Regional, while the Lady Bulldogs placed eighth.

The top four placers in each event qualified for the All-Classes State Championships, set for next Friday and Saturday.

“It was a (solid) meet for us,” ACHS coach Matt Kmiec said. “Lots of people with big performances. We are blessed to coach such hard working, amazing kids.”

Wilson won the 400 in 49.85 seconds, a hair off of his season-best of 49.86. He was the only competitor to clear 50 seconds, with runner-up Jared McDavitt needing 51.12 seconds.

Wilson captured the 4A State title last season in 49.37 seconds.

The Bulldogs also are the reigning 4A State champs in the boys 4x400 relay, but three of those runners graduated, leaving Wilson as the sole returnee.

Wilson teamed with Dylan Hettenbach, Brock Merz and Corbin Liermann to finish second in that event in 3:28.13. Andover won the Regional title in 3:36.25.

Hettenbach and Liermann are seniors and recent graduates, while Merz is a sophomore.

Wilson also qualified in the 100-meter dash after placing fourth in a season-best 11.11 seconds. Wilson’s previous best was an 11.22 that he ran in preliminaries.

Merz punched his ticket with a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles in 41.29 seconds, .18 of a second off of his previous best (41.11).

Senior Britton MacLaughlin will exit high school with an appearance at the Big Show.

MacLaughlin threw the javelin 152 feet, 2 inches to finish second to Cale Heady of Kapaun Mt. Carmel, who was 4 feet, 2 inches better. MacLaughlin’s season-best is 154-0, while Heady’s previous best was just 134-5.

Junior Spirit Frazier punched her ticket to State with a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash. Frazier opened with a 12.96-second preliminary time, good enough for fifth, then moved up two spots to third in a season-best 12.65 seconds.

Frazier ran the anchor leg on the 4x100 relay team that placed third in 51.9 seconds.

Breanna Zapata, Taylor Meinen and Juju Eaton led the way for the Lady Bulldogs, who also qualified in the 4x800 relay with a fourth-place finish in 10:52.26. Juniors Hadlea Shaw and Breanna Zapata were joined by sophomore Lydia Watanabe and freshman Mia Onelio as State-bound competitors.

The Lady Bulldogs just missed qualifying in the 4x400 relay. Meinen, Frazier, Shaw and Zapata finished fifth in 4:18.26, around 3 1/2 seconds behind Carroll.

Senior Kalyn Corley came awfully close to qualifying in three events.

Corley placed fifth in the girls shot put, heaving the orb 32-2, a bit more than two feet behind the final qualifier, Carroll’s Kaelyn Adolph (34-6 3/4). Corley placed sixth in both the javelin (95-9) and discus (96-0 1/2), right behind senior Isabel Harmon, whose throw of 97-3 1/2 was less than one foot from fourth-place Annette Sponsel of Carroll (98-0 1/2).

Freshman Lance Blubaugh narrowly missed punching his ticket in the javelin after placing fifth at 141-11. That was about four feet shorter than his season-best of 145-10, which would have been good enough to beat out Carroll’s John Honas for fourth (143-5).

Corbin Liermann, Caleb Liermann, Chase Mathews and Ivan Solis placed sixth in the 4x800 relay (8:44.85).

Senior Spencer Dumontelle was sixth in the boys pole vault (11-8). Meinen finished sixth in both the 300 hurdles (51.54) and triple jump (33-2 1/4).
