KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the fourth year in a row, the Clash 18U fast-pitch softball team captured the USSSA MO-KAN 18A State Tournament.

The Clash entered the tournament ranked No. 1, and with it a first-round bye in the double-elimination tournament.

That was beneficial when they played four extra innings in a two-hour opener to defeat the KC Monarchs 5-4.

The Clash posted a 3-0 shutout against the Originals from Independence, Mo., but fell 6-3 to the KC Zephyrs.

Facing elimination, the Clash knocked off Northwest Premier 4-1 for the right to face the undefeated Zephyrs for the championship.

Solid defense and pitching had been their strength to that point in the tournament, but the Clash bats came alive in the title game.

They defeated the Zephyrs 9-5 to force a winner-takes-all game.

The Zephyrs attacked first, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, but the Clash came back for a 6-3 victory for the state title.

Coaches are Charley Ellis, John Zito, Stanton Ruggles, Cory Gale and Wade Treat.
