Lady Tigers wrap up 7-0 homestand

Cowley College freshman forward Teagan Brouwer scores inside Friday against the Washburn JV at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The Cowley College women’s basketball team defeated the Washburn University junior varsity 74-57 on Friday night at W.S. Scott Auditorium, finishing a seven-game unbeaten homestand to open the 2019-20 season.

The Lady Tigers (7-0) shot 69 percent in the opening quarter to lead 25-15, but made only 4 of 18 shots in the second quarter to nurse a 35-29 lead at halftime.

Back-to-back baskets to open the second half by freshman Jayden Marlnee helped Cowley to regain a double-digit lead.

“We were a little sloppy in that second quarter, but other than that I was pleased,” Cowley coach Todd Clark said. “Jayden helped get us over the hump.”

Marlnee led the Lady Tigers with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Fellow freshman Shontrice Austin added 11 points and six rebounds, while Milena Fromming and Jessica McGrath added nine points apiece. Freshman post Teagan Brouwer finished with six points, four rebounds and two steals.

Daphne Williams went 5 of 10 from 3-point range and led the Lady Ichabods with 15 points.

The Lady Tigers play at 5:30 p.m. today at NOC-Tonkawa. Cowley defeated the Lady Mavericks 87-60 on Nov. 6 in Ark City.

“We look forward to the challenge of our first road trip of the season and to see how far we have come,” Clark said.
