Bulldogs win late

Arkansas City High School senior Andrew Schnackenberg drives in for a layup against pressure from Maize South’s Adam Kasitz in the first quarter Friday night in The Dawg Pound.

Arkansas City High School senior Jamauri Jordan drained a pair of free throws with seven seconds left Friday night to lead the Bulldogs to a 54-53 triumph against Maize South in AV-CTL D-II action in The Dawg Pound.

The Lady ’Dawgs fell 53-33.

Maize South responded to Jordan’s freebies with a 3-pointer, then intercepted Ark City’s inbounds pass across halfcourt, but was unable to get off a shot as the buzzer sounded.

The Bulldogs nursed a 28-25 lead at halftime, but trailed 41-40 entering the fourth quarter.

Jordan finished with a team-high 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 7 of 9 from the line to go with seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (10-8, 5-5 AV-CTL D-II), who were 12 of 15 from the line overall. Brock Merz added 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Doug Stewart chipped in six points, eight boards and five assists.

Ark City outrebounded the Mavericks (7-11, 4-6) by a staggering 43-19 to offset 17 turnovers to just nine for the visitors.

Trey Reid led all scorers with 19 points for the Mavs, who were 11 of 14 from the line.

The Lady Bulldogs (3-15, 0-10) held Maize South to just six second-quarter points to take a 21-20 lead into the locker room. But Ark City was outscored 33-12 in the second half.

Braylee Ruyle nailed a pair of 3-pointers in a 12-point effort, while Kamri Pool added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench for the Lady Bulldogs, who were 6 of 11 from the line.

Katie Wagner recorded a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double with five assists, and Macy McCormack also scored 14 points to lead the Lady Mavs, who were 14 of 23 from the stripe.

The Lady Bulldogs are in danger of missing the Class 5A Sub-State playoffs.

Ark City sits 17th in the Class 5A West Sub-State, but the KSHSAA eliminated all play-in games, so only the top 16 teams advance. The Lady Bulldogs are a full game behind 16th-place Great Bend (5-15) in the win column and two games behind 15th-place Hays (5-13).
